Get Involved on Clean Up Australia Day

Get involved in Clean Up Australia Day, and do your bit for our environment by joining in on cleaning up litter in our cities, beaches and waterways.

The nationwide community event which started in Sydney in 1989, aims to raise awareness and educate the community on litter and sustainability.

The Gold Coast has been involved in the event for over two decades and has been hosted by the City of Gold Coast together with Gecko (Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council).

Some important dates for 2016 are as follows:

Business Clean Up Day: Tuesday 1 March

Schools Clean Up Day: Friday 4 March

Clean Up Australia Day: Sunday 6 March

The community, local businesses and schools can get involved in three ways:

  • Register a site on the Clean Up Australia Day website at by Friday 19 March.
  • Register as volunteer in an existing site
  • Register a litter hotspot by contacting the Clean Up team at Gecko and let them promote the site for a clean up in 2016.

For more information on how you can help out, contact GECKO by email at or by phone at 07 5534 1412 and come along to help keep our beautiful area clean and tidy.
