What to expect when the GC2018 comes to Palm Beach

The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games committee has announced the Southern Gold Coast will host two free cycling events, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the local community to experience the world-class sporting competition in our own backyard.

Putting our seaside suburb on display as the world’s best compete in Palm Beach in April 2018, the cycling road race and cycling time trial will all commence from Currumbin’s beachfront on the Tuesday 10 and Saturday 14 April 2018, passing along Thrower Drive, Guineas Creek Road and Murtha Drive.

While local residents, businesses and visitors can enjoy front row seats during these events, the community can expect some changes, with the City of Gold Coast releasing the following details:

Course Infrastructure

The City of Gold Coast are committed to ensuring GC2018 is a safe and successful event for competitors and spectators. In some areas along the course route, there will be a requirement for fencing and safety barriers. Further information about installation, course set up and pack down will be provided to nearby residents and businesses later in 2017.

The engagement team will work directly with residents and businesses located along the course to ensure any inconveniences during the event period are minimised. Detailed planning is underway and more information will be available later in 2017.

Roadside parking along the course route will not be possible during the event. Residents and businesses will be asked to plan ahead and ensure all vehicles are removed from the course prior to the event.

During the road events, access along the course will change. We are working with Australia Post, courier companies, non-profit organisations and other service providers to ensure they are aware of and prepare for temporary changes required in the area. More information will be available later in 2017; however it is advisable that any non-essential deliveries are scheduled outside event days.

A dedicated spectator guide for the road events will be available in the lead up to GC2018, including viewing locations and further event information. Course details can be seen below.
