The 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games committee has announced the Southern Gold Coast as the host to two free cycling events, putting our seaside suburb on display as the world’s best compete in Palm Beach in GC2018 in April 2018.
The cycling road race and cycling time trial will all commence from Currumbin’s beachfront on Tuesday 10 and Saturday 14 April 2018, passing along Thrower Drive and Guineas Creek Road through to Murtha Drive and Nineteenth Ave in Elanora.
A rigorous technical process had been undertaken to design the courses under strict International Cycling Union (ICU) guidelines while showcasing the best of the Gold Coast’s coastline, creek and hinterland to a global television audience of 1.5 billion.
City of Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate, said this is a great outcome for the local Southern Gold Coast residents and businesses to be part of the GC2018 atmosphere.
“With the cycling courses extending from the coastline to the tropical rainforest surrounds of Currumbin Valley, the world will get a startling picture of the beauty and diversity of this amazing city we call home,” he said.
“These events, which are free to watch, will allow the athletes to shine on world-class courses in an environment like no other.”
