Councillor Daphne McDonald is urging Palm Beach residents and businesses to consider the impact of the light rail extending its services through Palm Beach.
The Gold Coast Light Rail project is not only the biggest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken on the Gold Coast, but is also one of the largest within Australia.
Cr McDonald said that whilst the community supports the changes for a light rail service from one end of the city to the other, residents need to think about the effects the proposed route will have on the Gold Coast Highway.
“One of the major impacts is the probable removal of on street parking along the Gold Coast Highway which would result in spill over to the nearby residential streets and have a general impact on local businesses,” she said.
“Light rail stops are generally a minimum of 800 to 1200 metres apart which may result in the removal of the existing bus service along the new rail route.”
“Engineering concerns have also been raised regarding the difficulty of trams crossing the Tallebudgera Creek from Burleigh Heads.”
